• If you want wifi in your house you will need both. If you have just one dedicated computer you want to access the internet with then a modem is all you need.

• If you receive internet service through a cable coming into your home from a cable company, then you need a modem. A modem is the gateway (LAN) from the cable to your router, computer and so forth. TV package notwithstanding. You must first check with your cable provider if they support this particular modem model, though.
