“Where is your on/off button? Do you need to open up and keep open the display to use the laptop? We will be replacing a laptop that we connect to a large flat panel and do not need the laptop to remain open other than our occasional mobile needs.”

The power button is on the upper right-hand corner of the keyboard. Yes, the lid can be closed while using an external monitor, settings need to be customized in the Control Panel > Power Options , click "Choose what closing the lid does".
