“What do you need to use a gaming headset in the single input? I currently bought this laptop but when I plug my headset into the input I can either use my mic or my headset not both. I have tried using an apple certified mic/headset combo and a set of beats with mic attachment.”

I don't know if the mic/headphone supports your headset or not. Your headset probably has 4 poles (look like 3 black stripes (possibly another color) on the 1/8" plug with 4 areas of bare metal). Sometimes only 2 or three poles may be supported. May want to try USB headset.
