Could be - maybe that is why it is so inexpensive? I installed it in my new computer which after I built it - not so surprising - there are better pieces of hardware introduced by manufacturers that are faster and cheaper then my one month old build. When it comes to DVD players - since this is old technology that is fading away as more people just use the internet, or thumb drives to get the same information that we get on DVD players.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is a question best directed to ASUS. I checked their online store and they list only certain products--external optical drives in this case. The same goes for other components, like motherboards. Only a few are listed at the ASUS store, but there are many more on the site's mobo page, where the "Where To Buy" button takes us to a page with several retailers for the mobos. It's the way business is done. Many manufactures market their products only through their retailers. Some offer their products directly (a limited number in ASUS's case), but at full MSRP. If they undercut their retailers, this would create conflicts and reduce the incentive for retailers to carry their products. And there are other considerations as well, such as the logistics of maintaining a full online retail store, while distributing products to retailers, etc.
