It can. It may depend on the motherboard (and OS). I just purchased and installed one in a HP Pavilion Slimline S7220n (SFF PC) recently upgraded to Windows 7 in order to replace the defective OEM drive. Since the original drive and the motherboard uses PATA/IDE for the optical drive, and since this new drive is SATA interface, I had to buy a SATA-to-PATA(IDE) adapter. It all seems to work fine.
