“bought this laptop recently .. the fan noise is loud even on "silent mode". this is while just browsing. it has a coil whine. is this something common?? it quite annoying :( also the track pad sometimes fails to recognize taps.”

Yes, it's normal. I think at first I heard the coil whinning. And the fan noises where loud (kinda). The trackpad may acquire more force to be pressed upon, but if it doesn't recongnize taps you should return it. Also if the finger print is too sticky, return it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Sounds like you may have a defective device. I have a slight hum in silent mode. The fans can get loud under a heavy load in Performance mode but it can vary and usually you would noticebover any audio you may have playing, like a game or something. So far no issues with track pad either. I would take it back if it's within the return period otherwise it would need to good to Asus for service.
