Make sure your son in college uses Bitlocker (built into Windows) to encrypt the HDD, and also have him go into BIOS to prevent boot-up from USB. Assuming he has a Windows password set, and the screen is locked, this will prevent thieves from being able to re-image the device. You can also consider Absolute.com cloud recovery services.
