“Is the 256GB SSD in the M.2 slot? If so, I want to swap that for a 1TB M.2 SSD but the upgrade guide says "The M.2 2280 slot does not support M.2 SATA SSD". What does that note mean?”

M.2 SSDs come in two forms, NVMe and SATA. The form factor is the same, but the data transfer protocol is different. This machine only supports M.2 NVMe drives. Yes, the 256GB SSD is in the M.2 slot.
