“Does anyone know if there is an open M.2 nvme slot on this particular model? The upgrade guide only shows how to replace what may or may not be there already. I haven't opened the case yet but am interested in adding internal drive space. Suggestions?”

This laptop has two M.2 slots, one is occupied from factory and the second is open. I added an extra 1TB of additional storage.
