“Is there a way to improve the resolution to an external HDMI monitor? I tried it with the stock settings and it looked pretty bad by todays standards. The maximum resolution is 1080 which makes Powerpoint look bad. Text is pixelated on a HD TV screen.”

The GeForce MX250 supports 4K, please make sure the TV's display preferences were setup correctly, th most current Nvidia driver was installed and Windows is up to date.
