• The same reason your 55 inch TV doesn't measure 55 inches when you measure across horizontally. Measure screens from bottom left to upper right corner, or lower right to upper left.

• Screen size is measured on the diagonal (corner to corner), not straight across - otherwise screen size would always need to include 2 dimensions: length and width or one of those and an aspect ratio.
