It cannot be hardwired. I do not believe it will work in rain as the cover is not that great a seal

I don't think so. The lock itself is installed indoors, and it doesn't look like it's waterproof. You may want to look at other brands/models, or contact one of the companies by phone to ask your question. From what I can see on the August Lock, I'd say "no" would be the answer for this model. No! This lock is an inside device only, It is not safe against the elements outside.
