You should be confident a secure to know that if the lock was previously used you can reset the lock and re add the smart lock to your account and only you will be able to operate it and anyone you authorize. The previous owner would need you to authorize them to have any control over the lock.

If the lock is still registered under a previous owner you could have the previous owner send an Owner invite to the lock. Or you could go through the reset process in order to set up the lock via the app from scratch. Our locks are compatible with most single-cylinder deadbolts. As long as it is a compatible deadbolt you can change the deadbolt and still use it with the August lock. Please feel free to check out our support site to see a list of compatible deadbolts.
