Using a smartphone/tablet shows more information on a larger, easier to see screen.

Please try again later.You don't need a smartphone with it of you don't plan or switching flight modes, camera modes, update waypoints, or guide your drone via touch over the map. I fly via FPV most of the time, more concentrating on the flight and automated return home, so I don't need my smartphone connected. But it's needed if you want to switch into Orbit Mode, Follow Me Mode, etc.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The smartphone can show you a live view of the drone's location on a map. In one occasion, I managed to forget the cable that attached my phone and the RC. I was not happy but at least I was able to fly without the phone.

The Evo's advanced functions are only available through the phone app. Also, for a lot of people that screen may be too small and most prefer their phone or tablet for a better viewing experience.
