You charge this unit and it will supply power to your devices off that charge without being plugged into the outlet. Or you can plug into an outlet and it will allow up to two grounded plug devices and one USB to be charged off it. Pretty handy.

It has its own rechargable batteries so if you don't have access to a power outlet, you could charge your smartphone/tablet via USB port (after charging this device from the power outlet).
