• This cable doesn't support 4k -- maybe that's the problem.

• This cable only works in one direction - HDMI (output) to DisplayPort (input). You cannot use this cable to send a DisplayPort output to an HDMI input.

• You do not need any software for it. Make sure you are selecting correct source on TV while it is connected. Also in your display settings on laptop you need to configure either you are extending the display or duplicating it. If you have 4k TV then you dont need to worry about resolution.
