“Is this USB hub good enough to protect 2 external hard drives while transferring data between them? My laptop has only 1 USB port available (I use the 2nd one all the time).”

I am not sure what you mean by protect, but both my linux and windows based systems recognized all of the drives that I have plugged in so moving data from one drive to the other or even cloning a drive should work fine.
