To activate Bitdefender you are now required to provide a credit card and agree to autorenewal (which you can later turn off). I just bought, then returned, Bitdefender (10 devices) from BestBuy in Canada. I had been a Norton user for over 10 years but could not longer put up with their unreasonable demands. The Bitdefender box didn't say anything on the package about requiring a credit card (which Norton does state) and there was a disc inside the box. I thought, "Great. I don't even have to download." However, installation requires you to check agreement to terms and conditions, which if you read then says you have to provide a credit card and agree to autorenewal. What is it with these guys strong-arming people into giving personal information to use a product they've alreay paid for. Even if you turn the autorenewal off, they still now have your name and address, and already know exactly where you go because of the nature of antivirus/vpn. Warning : The installation says if you aren't willing to agree to the T&Cs, you should quit installation and return to place you bought it for a refund. However, I met with some resistance as the usual rules for returns does not allow opened software. I did have a senior rep agree but clearly others present would not have allowed it. Be forewarned.

We paid Best Buy, so Norton wouldn't need my credit card to activate, but it wouldn't activate without a credit card, so we returned it to Best Buy, and got a refund. Greed appears to be more important than cyber security to Norton.

I think all of the software manufacturers are going that route. What really annoys me is the ridiculous jump in price. I bought one software brand a year ago and paid $30 for it online - the renewal price this year was $70 - glad I was able to opt out before they nailed my credit card. That was the reason I went to the store and purchased a different brand.

Auto-renewal can be turned off before purchase from the shopping cart, or after purchasing from your Central account (your account for managing the subscription you purchased).
