call your cable first to check with them that's the first thing i did before i purchased it and all I needed was the card from my cable provider. When you first turn it on a screen will pop up telling you to call the 800 Tivo number ignore it no need to call them they will tell you that you need one but it's false been using mine for 2 months now no problems
