YES, you need cablecard (at least with Spectrum cable service). Also make sure to plug USB cable from Spectrum decrypter box into the TOP USB PORT on the Tivo..... otherwise you'll never get it to pair with the Spectrum system. I subscribe to Spectrum in Kentucky and they were unable to get this working for a week until my husband (on the internet) stumbled across the USB port issue.
