I run the water through the kitchen faucet until it is hot. Then start the dishwasher. My hot water heater is in the garage, thus running water until it is hot before starting the dishwasher. Works well for me!

Your hot water heater should be set to deliver approximately 120° F (49° C) water to the dishwasher. Lower water temperatures will increase run times. A flow-through water heater increases the temperature of the water inside the appliance and can raise water temperature from 120° F to as high as 162° F. Consequently, you should not have to run the kitchen sink faucet prior to running the dishwasher.
