Yes you can add the salt in a special cone. I do not know who's work but without it my dishes still perfect !!

Yes. You have to fill a dispenser with special dishwasher salt. A full dispenser lasts 20+ washes. The panel display alerts when the dispenser needs to be refilled. Note: this is special salt made for dishwashers. I purchased the salt on Amazon.
