Hey there Ratart, thanks for asking! The Companion 5 multimedia speaker system is designed to work as a system, giving that immersive 5.1 experience without all of the extra speakers. Please try again later.I would imagine you could use just the base speaker... because the USB connector goes from the computer to the base box, then the speakers and volume controller connect to the the base unit... I never tried it myself, I don’t know why anybody would use only the base speaker because all of the speakers sound so awesome all together, I couldn’t imagine a stock laptop speaker sounding even close to the quality you would get from the Bose system.
