The right ear piece is the master control that connects to the phone, and then sends audio to the left ear piece. You do not need the left piece, but the right ear piece is required. No phone call audio will ever come out of the left ear piece either.

However, the right earbud is the "master" earbud that processes the Bluetooth signal and then sends it to the left earbud.
