“If I have this speaker plugged in and connected to an echo dot will it stay on all the time or will I have to kept powering it on? I would prefer it to stay on all the time.”

As long as the on light of the speaker is lit up, you can command Alexa to play on the name you assigned to that speaker. No need to power on and off. When you want to shut it off, just tell Alexa to turn off speaker. If you have an auxiliary port and plug in another music source, you will have to change the setting on the speaker to AUX.
