I purchased this believing it also had a battery system. It did not. My Bad. It is dependent on a source to send it signal. It is a Bluetooth speaker. There is an APP that Bose created for it that should work on Apple and Android systems. I could not get it to work on my Android so I cannot tell you of its limitations. As a Bluetooth speaker it has excellent sound.
