A standard 2X4 stud is actually 1 3/4" X 3 1/2". I had the same question, but I read on another site that this speaker requires 4 1/16" mounting depth. Too bad, because I really wanted to buy it. This begs the question of why Bose would design this speaker so it won't fit in a standard wall depth? I've noticed a couple other brands that have mounting depths greater than 3 1/2", so i guess the intent is to mount them behind a cabinet or maybe ceilings, because it doesn't look to me like it will fit in a standard wall.
