It depends on how you install the backup camera. Oddly enough there are two ways you can power the camera. It has a purple and white wire that you.can connect to either your gear shift to detect the vehicle is in reverse, or you can connect.it to your reverse light (that's what I always do). Then there is a red and white wire that will send power to the camera any time you press on the camera option on the home screen. You could even have both if you wanted. Make it kick on automatically when reverse is engaged as well as any other time you choose by tapping it. Hope that helps.
