“Which piece is the magnet? the metal plate that goes on the phone - - or - - the black circle on the actual vent mount? If I already have a metal plate inside my phone case - - will it "stick" to the mount?”

The magnet is in the part that clips on the dash. If you have a metal plate in your phone this will work great

I can't say for sure whether the metal plate you already have in your phone case will be compatible, but I can confirm that the magnet is on the mount.
