The earliest Apple operating system which Brother shows this printer having downloads available is 10.14. You can see for yourself here: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj1205w_us I would take this as an indication that your old iMac wouldn't be the best match. It just might not know what to do with such a modern beauty of a printer.
