• Yes, the Brother MFC-J995DW can print in black&white mode when the color cartridges run out.

• No - the tech guides and info on the BestBuy site are clear on this. Brother says the daily head-cleaning tasks involve pulling ink through color and black nozzles, and if there is no ink, air would be pulled through, damaging the nozzles. So Brother has intentionally disabled the ability to print if either ink is used up.
