I don't now, but I've been using my MFC-J485DW, which looks identical to this one, for more than five years. "Generic" cartridges work just fine. I've had HP, Canon, and Brother printers. I will never buy anything HP; Canon works Ok, but uses a lot of ink; I'm on my third Brother all-in-one now. When I moved, I just donated the first two.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. After trashing my 2 Canon year old printer with aftermarket cartridges I will just buy the brand name ink for the Brother printer.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Brother MFC-J1010DW does not have a cartridge protection setting. If you are not using Genuine Brother ink, the machine may not detect the ink cartridge. Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink cartridges or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevents smearing and clogging of the print head.
