“I am only interested in black & white printing. Will the MFC-J1010DW operate with ONLY the black ink cartridge installed?”

• I have a similar Brother unit MFC-j480dw ( which lighting just killed) and it won't work with just black. If all you want is black take a look at Laser printers- if you don't do a lot of printing it might be the way to go

• The Brother MFC-J1010DW machine is designed to stop all printing operations when any of the ink cartridges are low. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge and damage the print head.
