“When do you use cannon ink cartridge 251 and when do you use the 250?”

• The 251's are the small ink cartridges, cyan, magenta, yellow, and small black. The 250 is the large black.

• Both cartridges are to be installed on the printer. It’s not your choice. When you use the printer it determines which will be used. It seems likely though I cannot prove it that the 250 is used by the printer when a large amount of black is to be used such as printing letters and documents. The 251 is probably ink source for photos.
