“I am using this camera on my Canon 7D. Is there an extender (1.4x or 2.0x) that is compatible and will work with this lens? I recently tried a Kenko C-AFI 2x teleplus MC7 Doubler and that did not work.”

No. The canon extenders are compatible only with Canon's much more expensive L series telephoto lenses.
