This is probably the best Canon lens for sports, without jumping into L series lenses. You'll need a fast shutter speed to catch the action, but depending on the field lighting, you will probably need to bump up your ISO. As for f stop, I would play around with it, to get a feel, depending on what kind of shot you're looking for. Practice during warm ups, and see what you like.
