yes you must connect the printer to a phone line personally I use Dochub to send and receive faxes!!! Its way cheaper then a phone line and everything is virtual . Check it out!

Nevertheless, one would be wise to abandon such outdated technologies. Your document won't be sent over a POTS anyway, so you might as well scan the document at your end and create a PDF file. You can then either email it or upload it to a cloud location. For security, you can also encrypt the file (7-zip offers 256-bit "bank grade" encryption, for example, or perhaps use gpg).
