A:Answerusually the starter ink cartridges has a fraction of ink in even though it looks the same. THe printer has program also tells the ink level when you first open each time to use it. Which is great to keep track. I replace the black cartridges only before and not the color. Ink gets old and has an expiration date on it, I would not get before it is needed.

You cannot plug an external hard drive into this printer - or any other printer that I know of. There has to be a computer (laptop or desktop) between them to select and display the file you want to print. Your external drive can plug into the computer, and the computer can plug into (or wirelessly connect to) this printer.
A:AnswerJust replace when the printer tells you it is getting low for that color, have it on hand to replace. I bought black ink only because I dont use color all the time.
