It has both a flatbed scanner and a document feeder.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can scan either way with the Pixma TS9520-- flatbed or auto feed, so you would be able to scan from a notebook or painting. As far as I can tell, though, you have to start the scanning process from your computer rather than from the printer/scanner itself, using the scanner "utility" feature built into the software. I did not find this process very intuitive, and I had to get technical support to figure it out, but once that was done, the scanning turned out fine.
