G7 appears to have better optics, 1.8-2.8 aperture vs 2-11 in G9. Lower number means more light transmission to the sensor which means you can use a quicker shutter speed. Quicker shutter speed equals less motion blur and sharper pictures. This will also benefit you in low light situations at night or indoor. With the aperture set to 1.8 and your flash turned off you can get some great natural lighting photos at night that are still acceptable quality. In addition if you choose to use the flash it appears the G7 has a slightly stronger flash max 13-23 feet vs 7.9-20. G7 also provides the option to shoot "raw" images. Which may not mean much to you but has advantages when processing images on your computer.
