• The cutout for the protruding camera allows it to be flush with the case, so it does protect the camera.

• It doesn't go out of it's way to protect the camera, but the camera bump doesn't protrude beyond the cutout of the case. So in this sense, the camera is protected when compared to no case at all (where the camera does protrude from the body of the naked phone).
