I took them off because of that reason. I had read several reviews about a lot of smoke, burnt rubber smell and taste to the food, so i took them off, so far(going on 2 years) and no smoke, except for the first time we used it and used oil as recommended…big mistake, had do much smoke that our alarms went off and our alarm company called, so, in short, most definitely take those things off.
