Hi - The VTech CM18245 is an expansion deskset and cannot operate on its own. It must be registered to the main console, model CM18445. Once the CM18445 console is set up, you can add CM18245 as extensions. The entire system works with your existing phone number—no additional phone lines are required. Thank you, -VTech Support
