• Updating the ram won’t make the computer overheat. Sounds more like a bad fan or cpu cooler. This will definitely make the cpu run cooler though especially if he spends a lot of time gaming

• Yes absolutely. In your instance though I would make sure he is not over voltages. 1.4 is the highest you should be doing. I'd you're unsure there are automatic settings for your particular board.
