If you have available SATA ports on your desktop you do not need the adapter. You will only need it if all you have left on the desktop are USB ports.

We would like to inform you that the USB-SATA adapter cable is used to connect the drive externally if desktop system has only one 2.5 inch storage slot. If motherboard has more than one 2.5 inch storage slot then you will not need USB-SATA adapter cable. If system supports 2 internal storage slots then you can install drive in other storage slot and you can use it as secondary storage drive with old drive as primary boot drive. In case if system supports only one internal 2.5 inch storage slot then you can have USB-2.5 inch SATA adapter cable to connect drive externally and then you can use that drive for storage purpose.
