There is a plastic thermos lining under the metal lid along with a curved plastic shield inside the metal spout to prevent hot water from splashing out of the spout.

So far, we are really impressed with it and like the unit. Makes terrific tea. I drink a subtle Dragon Well green tea from a specialty company, and it rendered that tea extremely well--better than any I have had.
