I've been charging two deep cycle marine batteries for 3 years without any problems. Just fuse them properly because you're working with substantial current.

Hi Jim, I haven't taken mine apart yet, but typically a UPS uses two 12V batteries in series for a total of 24V, so simply use a battery bank wired for 24V.
