“There is an unusual plastic protrusion on the back that is in the way and blocks my outlet from plugging in all the way. QUESTION: What is it? Should I break it off? It is in a similar shape to the grounding part of the actual 3 pronged plug”

Hello Denny, Thank you for reaching out regarding this question. That plastic pin is supposed to go in the ground outlet plug of the lower outlet. This product is designed to occupy a standard duplex outlet, using the top half for the actual power and the bottom half using the plastic pin for stability.
