“I just purchased this computer and also ordered another 8GB stick of RAM (matching the brand/serial # of the stick that is already installed). Does it matter which slot I put the new stick in? Should it be next to the already installed stick? Thanks!”

Skip a slot. Also, the motherboard may have the ram slots colored, black and gray. Put them so they match

In most cases the RAM sticks should be installed on slots 2 and 4 from left to right.
