You have to use the connectors on the back of the GPU. Is your HDMI cord bad? Make sure there are no broken pins on the cord or inside the plug on the GPU, do not force it. You should also have a display port plug on the GPU but your monitor may not support DP. It would look similar to the HDMI but is different.
